With dimensions of 66 feet (20m) high, 241 feet (73m) long, and 63 feet (19m) wide, the Great Sphinx of Giza is the largest structure created from a single piece of stone.

It is also a figure synonymous with ancient Egyptian culture and remains shrouded in mystery.

Not everyone believes that the Sphinx was built for Khafre, however.

As far back as the mid-19th century, some Egyptologists pointed out that even though the Sphinx is located within the pyramid complex traditionally identified as Khafre’s, no contemporary inscriptions directly link him with the statue.

The most common wisdom holds that the monolith is around 4,500 years old, and was built for Khafre, a pharaoh of Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty who lived circa 2603-2578 B. His pyramid is the second tallest of the pyramids built at Giza, next to his father Khufu’s Great Pyramid.

To make up for its lesser size, Khafre’s pyramid was built at a higher elevation and surrounded by a more elaborate complex with numerous statues, including the Sphinx, the head of which is thought to be built in the pharaoh’s own image.

Using modern archaeological methods, the team revealed cultural material from the time of the pyramids, including numerous pieces of 4th Dynasty pottery (2575-2465 BC), right up through the Roman occupation of Egypt (30 BC-395 AD).James Allen as Director and Mark Lehner as Field Director.Sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) over a five-year period, the ARCE Sphinx Project produced the only existing large-scale maps of the Sphinx.Higher than a six-storey building, longer than a city block, and carved entirely from the natural bedrock, the Great Sphinx at Giza is one of the most enigmatic and ancient monuments in all of Egypt. As for the matter of its age, and who built it, this is one of the most hotly debated issues in science today.Below I have attempted to summarise the known facts, and put forward a few opinions.

As mentioned in an earlier section, its construction began with the excavation of a large trench around the outcrop of rock, and the collosal stones removed in this process were used to construct the Valley and Sphinx temples nearby – this has been proved by rock strata analysis.
